CNG DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
The Nigerian government is actively promoting the adoption of compressed natural gas (CNG) to address the challenges posed by the removal of fuel subsidies and to lower transportation costs. This effort is part of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), which seeks to convert a substantial number of vehicles to CNG and develop a comprehensive nationwide infrastructure for its utilization.
To date, more than 100,000 vehicles have been converted to CNG, with a goal of converting 1 million vehicles over the next three years. The government has established 19 accredited CNG conversion sites across Nigeria and launched 12 CNG retail stations in Abuja and Lagos. Additionally, plans are in place to expand the network of CNG stations throughout the country.
However, the widespread adoption of CNG faces challenges, including limited infrastructure, a shortage of conversion centers, and low public awareness. Despite these hurdles, the initiative continues to garner support from various stakeholders, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), NIPCO Gas Limited, and other private sector participants.
